Description of the Training

The Research Methods Course introduces participants to empirical approaches essential in answering questions that arise in their day to day programming and clinical practice. The training employs a participatory learning approach. By the end of the workshop participants will be knowledgeable and able to develop and conduct high impact research and other evaluation studies.

Target Audience

The Research Methods training course is applicable and highly relevant to practitioners in the development sector and researchers, It is highly encouraged that training applicants have some form of background with regards to basic theoretical knowledge in research.

Training Facilitators and Methods of Training Delivery

The Research Methods training course is facilitated by a multidisciplinary team of professionals with varied and relevant expertise in operations research, development and programming. This course is highly participatory and is conducted in simple English, and local languages as necessary.

Key Areas Covered and Duration

The Research Methods training course is delivered over a 5-day period (may be customised to suit the needs of the clients/groups under training). The course adopts a Ten-Step Guide in a customised fashioned explicitly focusing on:

  1. Problem Identification
  2. Formulating Clear Research Questions and Hypothesis
  3. Crafting SMART Objectives
  4. Choosing the Appropriate Research Designs: - Cross-sectional, Longitudinal (Cohort), Case Control Studies
  5. Establishing Study and Reference Populations
  6. Sampling Techniques and Sample Size Determination
  7. Study and Outcome Factors, and in the case of development programmes linking these to
    • Programme Indicators
    • Evaluation Frameworks (DAC Criteria)
  8. Research Methods and Tools focusing on Both Quantitative Approaches and Qualitative Participatory Methodologies (Participatory Reflective Analysis (PRA), Participatory Learning and Action (PLA)
  9. Data Management - Analysis and Quality Assurance
  10. Effective Reporting and Communication of Results
